What Does Laser Stand For?
What Does Laser Stand For?
What does laser stand for is a question that we get asked about a lot.
Some people write the word ‘laser’ as ‘lazer’ but when you know that the word ‘laser’ is actually an acronym (a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term) and that it actually stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation you will understand that the companies that use the word ‘lazer’ on their equipment don’t know much about their own subject and it is amazing to see how many “professionals” use the wrong word! Hmmmm…..
The answer to the question ‘what does laser stand for’ often makes people scared when they hear the word ‘radiation’ but radiation actually just means the process of emitting radiant energy in the form of waves or particles, so not really a dangerous process, just a misunderstood term.

What makes a laser unique is that it ‘radiates’ or ‘emits’ light in a single beam (or coherent) of light. A light bulb for example emits light in every direction in a manner known as scattered light. If you could collect all of the light going in every direction and bring it down to a single beam you would have something that looks like a laser beam.
“What does laser stand for” explains what a laser actually is – it is a device that radiates or emits concentrated light in a single beam.
This is the light that we take and use for all of the effects.
Most lasers that are used are safe, but if the operator does not understand the the use of laser technology or has not ever been trained in laser safety, there is a potential for danger!
We recommend that you only work with professionally trained laser operators to avoid any possible danger to your audience or your venue. There are many light and sound companies in The Philippines that are now providing laser, but none of them have been trained by a professional laser safety company in the use of laser effects.
Argon Animation is still the only registered company in the Philippines dedicated exclusively to laser show production and we were trained in England by Coherent (www.coherent.com) a world class laser manufacturer and by Laser Creations Inc. ( www.lci-uk.com) one on England’s largest laser show companies in Europe and Tim Bennett, President of Argon Animation Inc. has produced hundreds of laser shows on a worldwide basis including the 2.0 Millennium celebrations in Fort Bonifacio as well as the Philippine Centennial celebrations in 1998 at Clark at Expo Filipino in Pampanga which are still until today, the two biggest laser shows in the Philippines.
Lasers when used correctly are safe, beautiful and an incredible special effect for any show no matter how big or how small. Next time you are thinking about getting a laser for your event at least make sure that they know what the word laser stands for! At Argon Animation Inc. we know!
